Reinforcing the Canada-Mexico relationship
The Business Council of Canada and its members commend the Prime Minister for inviting President Claudia Sheinbaum of Mexico to next month’s G7 Leaders’ Summit in Kananaskis, Alberta. The invitation to President Sheinbaum reflects and reinforces the importance of the Canada-Mexico trade and investment partnership within the continental North American economy.
As the Council noted in a letter to the Prime Minister following the federal election, having both President Sheinbaum and U.S. President Donald Trump at the G7 creates the opportunity for Prime Minister Carney to arrange a trilateral side-meeting during which the three leaders can recommit their governments to the successful review and extension of the Canada-US-Mexico Agreement (CUSMA).
Expediting the review and extension of the CUSMA is the best and, in our judgment, only way to restore the certainty, stability and predictability required to regain the investor confidence that underpins our continental economy.
The Prime Minister’s willingness to bring North America’s leaders together represents a positive step towards restoring and renewing the close economic partnership from which the people of all three countries benefit.
