Rising to the challenge
Dear Friends,
2025 was a year that tried and tested us and ultimately taught us a great deal about who we are as Canadians. It was a year when our resilience was challenged and our assumptions were questioned.
But it was also a year when we were reminded of something important: we have everything we need to succeed in this country. Our talent, our resources, our values, and our potential are extraordinary. We simply need to focus on our strengths and work together. For that reason, I end this year far more optimistic than I was when it began.
2026 will be consequential for our economy and our place in the world as Canada, the United States and Mexico undergo a review and renewal of our trilateral trade agreement, the USMCA. It’s an agreement that underpins Canada’s economic strength.
That’s why, earlier this month, when I had the opportunity to testify before the Office of the United States Trade Representative (USTR) on the future of the U.S.–Mexico-Canada Agreement, my message was clear: we need a swift, steady, and constructive review and renewal. North America’s competitiveness depends on it.
I was encouraged that Canadian, American and Mexican business leaders spoke with one voice. Together, we issued a joint statement underscoring our shared commitment to a strong, integrated North American economy — one that supports jobs, strengthens supply chains, and positions our three countries to compete and win globally.
Canada’s success in the year ahead will depend on a united approach. We need all levels of government, business, labour, and civil society focused on one common shared goal: a stronger economy that benefits all Canadians.
We can get there. I truly believe that. The challenges ahead are real, but so is our capacity to meet them with ambition, courage, and collaboration.
Together, we will rise to meet the moment.
With best wishes,

Goldy Hyder
