Business Leaders Welcome Prime Minister’s Defence Announcement
“Business leaders welcome the Prime Minister’s announcement that Canada will meet NATO’s current investment-to-GDP target of two per cent by the end of this fiscal year.
The Business Council has long called for the federal government to meet this commitment to its allies and trading partners.
The Prime Minister’s commitment to prioritize increased investments in Canada’s defence industrial base is also encouraging. As the Business Council argued last year in its report, Security & Prosperity, the federal government will be unable to ensure workers’ safety, security and prosperity without a strong and sovereign defence industrial base.
To ensure today’s announcement is fiscally sustainable, the Business Council continues to urge that the federal government conduct a program review so that new defence spending is offset by the reallocation of funds from other areas. The Business Council looks forward to working with the federal government to help deliver on this important commitment.”
