With Canada Day fast approaching, the Nation’s Capital is decked out in red and white and our BCC office is getting into the spirit with flags on display in our windows.

As I look ahead to our national day, I’m filled with a sense of optimism, and I hope you are too.

For the first time in a long time, I’m seeing Canadians from coast to coast to coast galvanized by a shared sense of pride and purpose.

I am seeing and hearing hopeful, ambitious visions for Canada’s future that recognize our country’s formidable strengths.

We are endowed with abundant resources that can feed and fuel the world, we are a hub of world class innovation and invention, and, most importantly, our country is filled with smart, determined people.

We have an opportunity to unleash our full potential by working together, strengthening our economy and ensuring greater prosperity for all Canadians.

I spoke about this last week at the Senate of Canada as senators studied the federal government’s Bill C-5, An Act to enact the Free Trade and Labour Mobility in Canada Act and the Building Canada Act.

While not perfect, I believe Bill C-5 provides a bold framework for powering up Canada’s economy during challenging times. It encourages governments of all levels to collaborate and work with the private sector and Indigenous communities to build a strong, independent and prosperous Canada.

A robust economy means good-paying jobs, more money for our cherished social programs, and investments in innovative solutions to address problems we face.

I hope the Senate will vote in favour of the Bill this week so that we can get started. Now is the time to seize the moment.

This July 1st will mark my 50th Canada Day since my family made this wonderful country our home in August,1974. I cannot describe how proud I am to be a Canadian and how fortunate I feel that my parents chose this country as the place to pursue our dreams.

I will spend this Canada Day reflecting on this great country’s many, many gifts and the exciting promise that lies ahead.

Wishing you a very happy Canada Day!
