Statement on the West Jet Labour Disruption

Since both sides now confirm negotiations have reached an impasse, the government must act in the national interest and intervene immediately.

The federal government has a responsibility to all Canadians to use its lawful authority to restore air passenger service today. The cost of inaction will be devastating to Canadian families, the economy and the country’s reputation as a destination for investment.

The Business Council of Canada is deeply concerned with Canada’s ability to maintain a reliable transportation network.  Disruptions at our ports, railways, airlines, and seaways are now commonplace and come at a high cost to Canadian families and the thousands of businesses who rely on transportation to thrive and reach global markets.   

We continue to call on federal policymakers to create new powers and authorities to prevent, and when required, efficiently resolve labour disputes that harm the national interest and threaten Canada’s economic security.
