Guy Cormier is President and CEO of Desjardins Group, the leading cooperative financial group in North America and the fifth largest in the world. The organization currently has over $400 billion in assets and 7.5 million members and clients.
Mr. Cormier has worked for the cooperative for 30 years. He held several positions in the caisse network before becoming a caisse general manager in 2002. He was appointed Executive Vice-President of the Caisse Network in 2012, then Executive Vice-President of the Caisse Network and Personal Services in 2013. Throughout his career, he has encouraged bold, innovative actions aimed at improving the member and client experience.
Since being elected President of Desjardins Group in 2016, Mr. Cormier has worked hard to instill a strong member- and client-focused culture that resonates with all of Desjardins’s 58,000 employees and 2,500 directors. He created the $250 million GoodSpark Fund, which Desjardins uses to support community-building initiatives across Quebec and Ontario. He has also made growth a priority and helped make Desjardins a household name in Canada by highlighting the organization’s cooperative nature, its community involvement, its financial stability and the scope of its operations.
As a champion of the cooperative model, shared prosperity, youth and a greener, more inclusive economy in every region, Guy Cormier makes decisions that are based on the common good.
Mr. Cormier is committed to social issues, including sustainable development, responsible finance and the fight against climate change. He supports rethinking our current economic model, in favour of a more collaborative approach focused on long-term sustainability. He’s a proponent of shared prosperity, the circular economy and accelerating the transition to a low-carbon economy.
Keen to support youth and give them a forum where they can discuss the major issues facing our society, he established an advisory board made up of youth between the ages of 18 and 35. In 2020, he also became a sponsor and mentor with Academos, an organization that offers career guidance to young people.
Guy Cormier is a graduate of HEC Montréal, where he earned both an undergraduate degree in business administration and an MBA. He also taught finance there for almost 8 years. He currently sits on the board of directors of HEC Montréal, the Fondation Forces Avenir and the Conference Board of Canada. In 2016, he was named a Knight of the French Legion of Honor, and in 2022 he was awarded an honorary doctorate of law by the John Molson School of Business at Concordia University.
